Behaviour and Positive Relationships

Rooted in our vision: “Love God. Love your neighbour as yourself. Be the Good Samaritan” (Luke 10:25–37)

At St Luke’s Church of England Primary School, we believe that children are at the heart of all we do.

Our behaviour principles and approaches reflect our Christian vision and are lived out through our L.I.F.E. values: Love – Include – Flourish – Empower. We aim to create a nurturing and inclusive environment where all children feel safe, respected, and able to thrive.

The first document in the list below is a Governor statement of principles for behaviour. Schools need a governor statement of principles for behaviour and discipline to legally guide us in the development of our policy. Our statement outlines the general expectations for behaviour and discipline, promoting high standards, inclusivity, and a safe environment, and serves to give a clear framework to the headteacher, staff, parents, and pupils, ensuring a consistent and positive school culture in accordance with their duty of care

The links to the policy section of our school's website where you can access our Behaviour, Positive Relationships and Anti-Bullying Policy.  Our approach to behaviour and relationships is rooted in respect, consistency, and restorative practice. We take inspiration from Paul Dix and his influential book When the Adults Change, Everything Changes, which emphasises the power of adult behaviour in shaping a positive school culture. Dix highlights that when staff model calm, consistent, and kind responses, children thrive in an environment where they feel safe, respected, and ready to learn. His work reminds us that the smallest of adult choices – tone of voice, body language, consistency in routines – can have the biggest impact on children’s behaviour. Alongside this, our strategies are also underpinned by the work of Dr Bill Rogers, a leading international expert in behaviour management and classroom discipline. Dr Rogers has spent decades working with schools around the world, developing practical strategies that help teachers build positive relationships while maintaining clear boundaries. His approach is centred on dignity, respect, and empathy, showing that firm guidance can sit alongside compassion and understanding. His emphasis on restorative conversations, preventative strategies, and the importance of repairing relationships aligns strongly with our values.  Together, these influences shape a policy that is not about punishment, but about creating a safe, consistent, and nurturing environment where both adults and children can flourish. Our can be accessed through an internal link to the policy section of our website.

The third documents are our Behaviour Blueprints. These are designed for staff, parents/carers and children and our written for Early Years/Year 1 and Year 2-6. They guide our approaches and systems and are displayed in classrooms as well as being shared with our children.
