At St Luke’s Church of England Primary School, our Christian vision is deeply connected to the Fundamental British Values (FBVs), which we actively promote through all areas of school life.
We teach British values explicitly through PSHE, RE, collective worship, circle time, and across our curriculum. They are also embedded in our relationships, leadership structures, behaviour policies, and school culture. Pupils are encouraged to reflect, take responsibility, and contribute positively to society, both within and beyond the school community.
We recognise that living out our Christian vision naturally supports the development of these values in meaningful and age-appropriate ways:
Fundamental British Value | How This Is Lived Out at St Luke’s | How This Links to Our Vision |
---|---|---|
Democracy | Pupil voice is central – mixed age student council, Head Boy, Head Girl, Digital leaders, House captains and other roles enable children to be heard. | “Empower each other to make positive change” – we teach children their voice matters. |
Rule of Law | Children learn about responsibility, fairness, and justice through school rules, restorative practice, and PSHE. | “Treat everyone with respect and compassion” – we all help create a safe, just community. |
Individual Liberty | Pupils are encouraged to express themselves, make choices and take ownership of their learning and actions. | “Flourish and reach our full potential” – every child is supported to grow confidently. |
Mutual Respect | Respect is a core expectation for all. Differences are valued and every person is treated with dignity. | “Love your neighbour as yourself” – we model compassion in every relationship. |
Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs | We celebrate diversity through RE, themed weeks, visits, and an inclusive curriculum. We have a strong focus on the protected characteristics which are all actively taught. | “An inclusive school where everyone belongs” – every child is welcomed and valued. |
Collective Worship often explores British values through a Christian lens, linking them to scripture and ethical living.
RE and PSHE lessons help children understand different perspectives, religious and non-religious worldviews, and how to live in harmony.
Behaviour expectations are rooted in mutual respect, kindness, and fairness, promoting a strong sense of right and wrong.
Leadership opportunities help pupils practise responsibility and service in their community.
Inclusive practice ensures that everyone, regardless of background, ability, or belief, is valued and supported.
By living out our Christian vision, St Luke’s provides a rich and meaningful foundation for understanding and promoting British values, helping our children to become thoughtful, respectful and engaged members of modern British society.
