Student Council

A distinctive feature  at St Luke’s is our unique, inclusive and purposeful approach to the Student Council. Every child in key stage 2 is a member of the School Council, ensuring that all pupils have a voice and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to school life. This reflects our commitment to inclusion, equity and collective responsibility.

Student Council sessions are structured and purposeful. Standardised agendas are used consistently with the school’s Christian vision and LIFE.principles as well as our understanding of christian teachings.

Discussion themes are explicitly linked to our Spirituality Policy, as well as key values such as fairness, responsibility and courageous advocacy. Council meetings are also used to explore and reflect on themed weeks, such as Anti-Bullying Week, ensuring learning is responsive to both curriculum and lived experience.

Following each Student Council session, Head Boy and Head Girl meet with the Headteacher to share key outcomes, reflections and agreed actions. Record sheets are completed to capture pupil voice, decisions and next steps, ensuring accountability and continuity.

The Student Council also plays an important role in supporting positive behaviour and culture across the school. It is used proactively as a forum to address emerging behaviours identified through daily records, including issues such as roasting, discriminatory or homophobic language, and body shaming. These discussions are handled sensitively and constructively, enabling pupils to reflect, understand impact and develop empathy.

Through this approach, the Student Council is not only a platform for pupil voice, but also a powerful tool for character education, safeguarding, and community building. It empowers pupils to articulate views respectfully, challenge injustice and contribute to a safe, inclusive and compassionate learning environment where everyone belongs.
